Hopedale, originally called Agvituk meaning 'a place where there are whales', was first established in 1782 by Moravian Missionaries. The date in which the name was changed is not known for sure, but it is suspected that it occurred shortly after 1782. The Hopedale Mission building, which is still standing, is considered one of, if not the oldest building east of Quebec.

If you really want to experience the north and some of the world's best fishing a trip to Hopedale is well worth the effort.
