Hopedale Inuit Community Government - Nunatsiavut

Hopedale is located on the northern Labrador coast, amongst the large bays that open up to the Labrador Sea. The population of the community is approximately 620, most of whom are beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement.

Brief History

Photo Hopedale, originally called Agvituk meaning 'a place where there are whales', was first established in 1782 by Moravian Missionaries. The date in which the name was changed is not known for sure, but it is suspected that it occurred shortly after 1782. The Hopedale Mission building, which is still standing, is considered one of, if not the oldest building east of Quebec.

Great Fishing!

Photo If you really want to experience the north and some of the world's best fishing a trip to Hopedale is well worth the effort.

If you follow the Amaguk Inn link to the right you will see more information about fishing, accommodations, more history, an excellent map with directions to Hopedale, video tours and contact information.

You are really going to enjoy this community, which Moravians settled in the 1782!
