Norman Bay was a winter settlement for the fishing stations of Snug Harbour and Venison Tickle. At the time when southeast Labrador fishing stations were being encouraged to resettle in the 1960's, the Ward family at Snug Harbour resisted pressures to move to Charlottetown or another larger community and instead made Norman Bay their home. The Wards were later joined by one or two other families. This is why Norman Bay population is made up mostly of Wards.

Norman Bay lies in an extension of Martin Bay, approximately 30 km northeast of Charlottetown. However, the community is reliant on most services in Charlottetown. i.e. postal, air, marine, and health services.
Norman Bay can be considered one of Labrador's most rural communities and transportation to the community is a challenge. Resident's in this area have long advocated a better system to their community, but by making the effort you will gain a real feel for small town life in a Labrador fishing village!
