Supported employment is defined as paid employment for adults with developmental disabilities who require ongoing support in order to succeed in a work setting.
Supported employment successfully meets the needs of the employers and employees through one-on-one instruction in job skills. A job trainer or co-worker provides this instruction at no cost to the employer and assists the supported employee with learning work skills and meeting the job requirements to ensure the job is done to the employer's satisfaction. Co-workers are used thoroughly for motivation, supervision, incentive, and promoting workplace interaction. Program Description
Lake Melville Community Employment Inc. delivers the Supported Employment Program in the Lake Melville area. We provide the supports necessary to assist in sustaining paid employment for persons with intellectual disabilities.
Support needs vary with each client and are provided according to each individual situation. Supported Employment options typically include: - Individual supported employment in the labour force - Contractual employment - Self-employment - Small business development Program Delivery
LMCEI provides intake on clients that are either referred from other agencies or who are self referred. We begin to work with the client to identify his/her abilities and interests. Once the abilities and interests have been identified, the Executive Director begins the job search and job match process. This process can include:
- preparing resume and cover letter - contacting potential employers - sending resumes to potential employers - working with the client on improving interview skills - providing moral support by bringing the client to the interview - on the job training Once the client is hired, the employer is responsible for paying the wages of the client, or supported employee, and LMCEI can provide a support worker or job trainer at no cost to the employer. A volunteer board of directors oversees the delivery of the Supported Employment Program. The board will ensure that Supported Employment services are carried out with the involvement of the local business community. The Board of Directors employs an Executive Director who assists the Board of LMCEI in their efforts. The Executive Director coordinates and manages the daily operations of the corporation and meets with members of the business community to identify potential job placements. The Executive Director aims daily efforts at finding employment opportunities for clients and arranges the necessary support when employment is obtained. The Executive Director is also required to represent the Board and the Employment Corporation on various committees and organizations from time to time. This helps promote the mandate of LMCEI.
