Government in LabradorLabrador is governed at three levels: National, Provincial and Municipal in additional to special aboriginal governance through the Labrador Inuit Association, the Innu Nation and the Labrador Metis Nation.
Municipal Government
In total Labrador has thirty-two communities of various status. Most are incorporated as municipalities while others are registered local service districts, two are Innu band councils, there is one private town owned by the Churchills Falls Labrador Corporation and a variety of Labrador's most rural communities are not incorporated or registered in any form.
Inuit Governance
The Labrador Inuit Association (LIA) was formed in 1975 to promote/protect the Inuit culture, language, and traditional lands and to assist with land claims negotiations.
There are over 5400 members of the Labrador Inuit Association living in Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik, Rigolet and the Upper Lake Melville area. The LIA headquarters is located in Nain. The Labrador Inuit Association has several affiliate organizations including the Labrador Inuit Development Corporation, Labrador Inuit Health Commission, Torngat Regional Housing Association, Torngasok Cultural Centre and Inuit Pathways. Innu Governance
The Innu Nation was first incorporated in 1977 as the Naskapi-Montagagnais Innu Association and protects the rights, lands and way of life of the Innu people. The Innu Nation continues to take this role.
The communities of Natuashish and Sheshatshiu an elected Band Council that works closely with the Innu Nation. Both communities are equally represented on the Board of Directors, and also equally represented by gender. Metis Governance
The Labrador Métis Association was established in 1985, and was changed to the Labrador Métis Nation in 1998.
The Labrador Métis are advocating that their aboriginal roots be acknowledged by federal and provincial governments. Provincial Government
